Palermo wins Capital of Culture 2018
Palermo, Sicily has been named the Italian Capital of
Culture for 2018 by the Italian Culture Ministry. The award recognises
Palermo's historical legacy, cuisine and range of cultural venues. There will
be a year long calendar of events to celebrate with initiatives currently under
development including promoting an Arab-Norman route connecting Palermo with
Cefalù and Monreale (the path was recently granted UNESCO Heritage status) and
world-class opera performances for the city’s Teatro Massimo.
Palermo, one of the most beautiful cities in Italy with a
truly enviable historical and cultural legacy, was one of the finalists on the
shortlist of ten cities: the others were Alghero, Aquileia, Comacchio,
Ercolano, Montebelluna, Recanati, Settimo Torinese , Trento, and a joint
Elima-Erice bid (including Buseto Palizzolo, Custonaci, Erice, Paceco, San Vito
Lo Capo, and Valderice). Now that the
city has achieved this recognition, the Sicilian capital will gain certain
economic benefits. For starters, it will receive €1 million, allowing it to
carry out investments to promote cultural activities and increase the value of
its artistic heritage.
Palermo was also named the Italian Capital of Young People
2017.

Introducing Elba
The island of Elba lies 10km west of the Tuscan coastline in north west Italy and 50km east of the French island of Corsica. Whilst being part of Italy, it has an unique blend of landscapes, architecture and cultures creating one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
Elba is the third biggest Italian island after Sicily and Sardinia, but only 224sqkm in area with 150km of coastline with many beautiful, sandy beaches, cliffs and coves bordering a crystalline sea. The countryside is green and fertile, particularly in the west which is overlooked by Monte Capanne (1,019m) and known as the ‘Roof of the Tuscan Archipelago’.
