Sicily boasts an array of picturesque beaches,
some considered to be the most beautiful of their kind in the Mediterranean.
Wherever you are in Sicily, there will be a stunning coastline within easy
reach, with beautiful bays, beaches and nature reserves to discover, from the
famous 'film set' pebble beaches of Mazzaro and Isola Bella in Taormina to the
unspoilt north west Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve and the long white sandy beach
with translucent azure sea at San Vito Lo Capo.
Being the largest island in the Mediterranean, the Sicilian
coastline varies enormously from north to south and east to west with many 'Secret Beaches'. However our resident Sicilian 'Aurora' would recommend visiting Spiaggia Pineta del
Gelsomineto (image above) on the sea at the mouth of Cavagrande Nature
Reserve near the town of Avola on the most undeveloped stretch of coast on the
east side of the island. This beach is tucked away and hard to find
but very scenic with the canyon/estuary leading up through the nature reserve
also with picturesque rocky beaches at Fonti del Cassibile (image on right). The sandy beach of Gelsomineta has trees for shade and clear
sea ideal for swimming and snorkelling around the rocks.
To visit these beautiful beaches, we would suggest staying at Borgo Alveria Country Resort https://www.justsicily.co.uk/accommodation/9/Borgo-Alveria-Country-Resort/, an ideal base to explore the south east
of Sicily and is 13km from Cavagrande Nature Reserve and 25km from
Avola. This boutique hotel has been recreated on the site of an ancient
monastery 700m away from the Porta Aurea in the old town of Noto, yet 10km away
from today's city in the south eastern countryside of Sicily. Using the ancient
stones and historic walls they have created 12 guest rooms and authentic
Sicilian restaurant set in natural gardens with a pool surrounded by 19
hectares of countryside.
